THE BLOG

If you or your teen is planning to apply for a learner’s permit in the new year, there’s an important change you need to know about.

Beginning January 1, 2026, Connecticut will require all learner’s permit applicants to complete a Work Zone Safety Training course before they can obtain their permit. This new requirement applies to anyone applying for a permit on or after that date—if you already have your permit, you’re all set.

Why Work Zone Safety?

Work zones are among the most challenging driving environments, even for experienced drivers. Lane shifts, reduced speeds, uneven pavement, heavy equipment, and workers on foot all demand heightened awareness and quick decision-making.

For new drivers who are still building their foundational skills, these situations can be especially stressful. By requiring work zone training before a teen even gets their permit, Connecticut is ensuring that safe habits and awareness start from day one.

It’s a smart, proactive approach—and one that protects not just new drivers, but the road workers who put themselves at risk every day to maintain and improve our highways.

What You Need to Do

The process is straightforward:

The Work Zone Safety Training is available online starting and you can access it here: https://work-zone-safe.teachable.com/p/about411111

Once you complete the training, you’ll need to print your completion certificate. When you go to the DMV to apply for your learner’s permit, bring the certificate with you—it’s now a required document.

What If I Already Have My Permit?

If you obtained your learner’s permit before January 1, 2026, you are not required to complete this training. The requirement only applies to new permit applicants going forward.
