1. Getting Ready to Drive

Instructions: Start this section in a parking lot with the car engine off. Student should enter the car and prepare to drive as you've practiced.

Checks exterior of car before entering
Adjusts all mirrors
Adjusts seat, steering & headrest
Fastens seatbelt for self and checks all passengers
Starts the car properly
Release parking brake
Make sure it is safe to move forward/reverse
Safe exit from parking space
2. Driving Skills

Instructions: Proceed to a main residential or city road that allows the student to complete the following maneuvers.

Stop Signs
Approaches stop sign smoothly
Stops completely - creeps forward if necessary
Recognize the right of way
Speed Control
Follows posted speed limit - not above or below
Keeps a safe following distance (3 second rule)
Adjusts speed appropriately for road conditions, emergencies
Left Turns
Uses correct lane and signals intention
Yields to oncoming traffic
Turns smoothly and evenly
Continues in proper lane after turn
Lane Changes
Uses turn signal
Looks over shoulder and in mirrors before changing lanes
Maintains speed and proper lane position
Unique Situations (As Encountered)
Emergency Vehicles: Pulls over to let emergency vehicle pass (either direction)
Construction Zones: Maintain posted construction zone speed limit
Obeys all instructions from flaggers directing traffic
Maintains awareness to changing road conditions
Hazard Awareness
Uses good judgement at all times
Is aware of hazards as they appear and takes appropriate action
Listens to directions from instructor
3. Parking Skills

Instructions: Use appropriate locations as noted below.

Parallel Parking (City street or parking lot)
Executes maneuver smoothly
Does not hit curb backing up
Stays within 12 inches of curb
Vehicle can easily pull out of the parking space
Back-In Parking (Parking Lot)
Executes maneuver smoothly
Looks over shoulder and uses mirrors while backing up
Aligns vehicle evenly between lines
Makes correction if necessary (not more than 2 times)
Pull-In Parking (Parking Lot)
Smoothly enters the parking space
Parks evenly between the lines
K-Turn/3-Point Turn (Quiet residential street)
Safely turns the vehicle around in the desired space
Does not hit curb backing up
Follows proper signaling and observation protocols
