What should you expect from us as we re-open?

Like most small businesses, we’ve been closed for three months by the state.  However, unlike some businesses that can quickly meet customer demand fairly seamlessly, our reopening is much more complicated.

  • First, we have an overwhelming backlog of driving lessons and road tests that didn’t happen over the last 90 days, all of which now need to be rescheduled.
  • Second, about 30% of our instructors are not coming back to work because they’re part of the at-risk group for COVID-19.  We’re hiring and training new instructors, but have no assurance from the DMV that their weeks-long instructor-certification process will be expedited.  So, the reality is, our driving lesson capacity will be less this summer than it was three months ago.

Perhaps the best analogy is reopening only one lane of I-95 South to traffic after an unexpected and lengthy closure.  All those cars still need to get through, but it’s going to take a lot longer than usual. And it’s not going to be pretty.

The bottom line is, it’s not business as usual for us, and it won’t be for some time.

DMV Road Tests @ FGL (Updated 6.24.2020)

As of June 23rd, the DMV has resumed Road Tests at Fresh Green Light.  We are given our Road Test dates one year in advance by the CT DMV, so these are Road Tests that have been scheduled on our calendar prior to the shut-down.

The DMV has told us they will try and offer additional Road Tests dates when possible over the the next few months to make up for the 25 cancelled tests between March 16th and June 20th. We have received one make-up date so far.  (Each test date has a maximum of 18 students who can test)

The CT DMV has also issued required protocols for Road Tests that take place at our locations that MUST be followed by all students.  This includes wearing FGL provided KN95 masks and protective gloves, so please review prior to your Road Test.

IF YOUR ROAD TEST @ FGL WAS CANCELLED BETWEEN MARCH 16-JUNE 21ST:
We are doing our best to reschedule students with road tests that were cancelled into our existing summer Road Test dates that have availability. Many of the early test dates from March and early April have been rescheduled.

Our expectation is that the DMV will provide us with additional test dates that we can use exclusively for students who were scheduled as part of the 25 tests we had cancelled.  (So far we have been given ONE additional test date as of 6.23.2020)

Our Road Test team will be in touch as we receive additional Road Test dates or openings.

IF YOU HAVE A ROAD TEST SCHEDULED @ FGL AFTER JUNE 22ND:
If you have a Road Test scheduled at Fresh Green Light after Monday, June 22nd, we will honor your spot in that test as long as you are able to complete your requirements in time to test. (Since our system allowed booking Road Tests 6 months in advance, some students did  indeed schedule their tests for July and August before the pandemic shut down.)

Based on the limited in-car driving lessons we are starting on Saturday, June 20th, we may reschedule your test date to later in the summer if you need 4 or more driving lessons.

Our Road Test team will be in touch over the next few weeks to confirm or reschedule your test date.

MY FRIEND GOT AN EARLIER TEST DATE WITH FGL THAN I DID – WHY?

Yes, this is a question we are getting on a daily basis.

Some people signed up for a Road Test earlier than you did.  Some people need driving lessons to be able to test.  Sometimes tests are full and we don’t have any more open spots. Some times, the DMV calls us a day in advance and asks us if we want to add a test – like what happened this week.

Please know that are being fair and doing the best we can to get EVERYONE whose test was cancelled (400+ students) rescheduled in July and August – with very little help from the DMV at this point. Please be patient.

I NEED MY ROAD TEST AS SOON AS POSSIBLE – WHAT CAN I DO?

We understand. We really do.

Everyone wants their test as soon as possible but please understand that we’ve just gone through an unprecedented shut down and have a 90 day backlog of tests.  A realistic expectation is that you will get a test hopefully within 90 days of when your original test was scheduled. Hopefully.

I DON’T HAVE A ROAD TEST SCHEDULED WITH FGL – WHAT ABOUT ME?
At this point, we are not scheduling ANY new Road Test appointments at our locations until all students with cancelled road test appointments have been taken care of.

While we know many of you are anxious to get your driver’s license before school starts, the timing of this is 100% out of our control .

Once we are able to offer Road Tests to our students again, we will let everyone know.

In-Car Lessons @ FGL (Updated 6.24.2020)

As per the State of CT and the DMV, we have instituted new safety protocols for all of our in-car driving lessons.  Please review these protocols prior to your driving lessons.

WHO ARE YOU CURRENTLY SCHEDULING?

We are currently scheduling driving lessons for the following group:

  • Students who have a scheduled (July/August) or cancelled road test at our facility and need less than three driving lessons in order to test.

If you are in this group, our office staff will be reaching out to you by phone or email to get you scheduled over the coming weeks.

WHAT IF I’M NOT IN THE GROUP LISTED ABOVE?

The next step will be booking students based on the date they signed up for our program, with those who have been with us the longest getting the first opportunity to reschedule their lessons.

We do not yet have a timeframe for when this will be.  We are hoping that this will happen by early July.

WHEN CAN I START TO SCHEDULE LESSONS ONLINE?

Our online scheduling system for in-car lessons is currently disabled until we work through this backlog. Our goal is to have the online system back up and running by mid/late July for all students.

What Do We Expect From You As We Re-Open?

To put it simply, we expect the same from you that you should expect from us … empathy, respect and fairness

Please know that we’re doing the very best we can to manage this unprecedented situation. It’s not ideal for anyone.  We know you’re going to be frustrated.  We are too.  But the circumstances are, in so many ways, truly out of our control.

As the owner of the business, I’d like to graciously ask you for one thing.  Please don’t take your frustration out on our staff.  Each of our team will do all they can to find you the best solution that’s both fair and feasible at this moment in time.  Sometimes that solution might not be ideal for you. (Honestly, it probably won’t be, given the circumstances.) But it’s going to be the best we can do right now.

At the end of the day, some of our customers may decide that what we’re able to offer doesn’t meet their needs.  We understand that, and we’re prepared to refund the cost of any unused driving lessons so they can work with another driving school to complete them.
